Milestones

A year we won't soon forget

Even in the face of challenging circumstances due to the COVID-19 pandemic, IUPUI marked several milestones from the year. From a top ranking from U.S. News and World Report to new buildings on campus, 2020 was a year of progress and advancement on our campus.

Top ranking by U.S News & World Report

IUPUI secured continued recognition as a Tier 1 national university with outstanding graduate and undergraduate programs in the latest U.S. News and World Report rankings of the nation's best colleges. With top-ranked graduate programs, including the #3 master's program in nonprofit management and #4 online nursing master's program in the country, IUPUI also tied for 12th with Texas A&M, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and the University of Florida, among all public national universities for best undergraduate teaching.

Steadfast commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

IUPUI demonstrated its continued commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion by establishing the Action Committee, which has developed recommendations to promote antiracist practices and policies on campus. Those recommendations led to the establishment of the Center for Africana Studies and Culture as well as the Through their Eyes Scholarship, supporting students whose families were displaced when the campus was formed. In recognition of IUPUI's ongoing commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine recognized the campus with a ninth consecutive Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award. IUPUI is one of only six institutions of higher education in the country to be honored nine years in a row, every year the award has been given.

COVID-19 planning and response

To guide university administrators in decision making in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, IUPUI assembled 12 task forces with members representing all segments of the campus community to conduct scenario planning for the fall 2020 semester and to consider the impact on academic programs, student affairs, enrollment, equity and inclusion, facilities, auxiliary services, and other key areas. Important health, safety, and operational updates were provided to students, faculty, and staff through regular communication, including town halls attended by thousands of IUPUI community members.

The Indiana University Medical Response Team of experts was established to inform the university's efforts to keep campus safe during the pandemic. Led by top doctors at the School of Medicine, the team meets daily to assess virus spread, control efforts, and resource allocation. On August 24, 2020, IUPUI began conducting ongoing mitigation testing of on-campus students, faculty, and staff. As of January 28, 2021, IUPUI has collected 45,981 test results with just a 0.9 percent positivity rate.

Innovation Hall

State-of-the-art Innovation Hall is designed to meet the evolving needs in the vitally important STEM disciplines. The building, located on Michigan Street between West and Blackford streets, includes two Class 1000 clean rooms and a Class 100 clean room, one of very few located at public universities in Indiana. Innovation Hall is also home to a total of 29 laboratories as well as faculty offices and classroom spaces, including a Collaborative Theater for cutting-edge engaged teaching and learning.
